FATAL SHOOTING IN JASPER

Hamilton Sheriff’s Office seeking leads

A local man was shot to death Wednesday in Jasper just before midnight, Hamilton County Sheriff J. Harrell Reid said.

Fatally wounded was 31-year-old Dekovan Lenard "Nap" Walls. Walls was transported to the Emergency Medical Services office in Jasper by private vehicle prior to the notification of law enforcement and was pronounced dead upon arrival. His body has been taken to the medical examiners office in Jacksonville where an autopsy will be performed.

According to Reid, the shooting occurred around 11 p.m., by person or persons unknown, who entered the yard of the residence at 1233 SW 3rd Street, Jasper, and opened fire. Numerous rounds were fired into the house, with two of the four occupants being struck.

Jeffery Walls, 29, received a gunshot wound to the foot and was transported to Shands Live Oak by private vehicle prior to law enforcement notification.

Also present in the residence at the time of the shooting was 19-year-old Joshua Smith and 24-year-old Jeremy Walls, both of whom escaped injury.

"We need people to step forward with information into this case," said Reid. "No one seems to want to pass on the details regarding this young man's death. Anyone with information is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers and remain anonymous. Crime Stoppers offers a reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction, but the Sheriff's Department is willing to go above and beyond that amount."

Local law enforcement officials continue the investigation into this incident. Information may be called into Crime-Stoppers at 386-792-TIPS (8477), or the sheriff's office itself at 386-792-7100.
