Two Lake City brothers were injured in an auto accident Monday, Aug. 17, at the US 129 and I-75 interchange in Hamilton County. Joseph Lamar Sheppard was transported to Lake City Medical Center via EMS, where he was treated and released, according to Florida Highway Patrol reports. Michael Scott Sheppard was transported to Shands of Gainesville via Life Flight, where he was listed in stable condition as of Tuesday.
At about 1:45 p.m. a 2007 Dodge driven by Jeffery Michael Augustyn turned right into the path of the Nissan Pickup being driven by Michael Sheppard, said FHP.
Eyewitness Kenya Byrd, who was traveling north on US 129 behind both vehicles, told the News, "The red car got into the turning lane like it was going to turn left onto I-75. The green truck was continuing on toward Jasper when suddenly the car turned right to go into the parking lot. The truck tried to swerve to miss the car, but the car kept coming and hit the truck. The truck just started rolling over. It flipped over three times. I've never seen anything like this."
According to Lt. Mike Holton of the Jasper Police Department, Augustyn was charged with improper change of lane or course, causing the accident.
