THE PAST PRESERVED

Judge brings history back to life

By Stephenie Livingston, Reporter

Judge Darren Jackson was recently given two nearly destroyed photographs which once belonged to his grandfather, former Lafayette County Sheriff Chandler Land, by Jimmy Witt, a retired warden. Thanks to the help of several town elders and Alan Johnson, who helped in the restoration process, Jackson was able to restore both photographs and identify the original courtroom, Judge Hal Adams, and the old jail. The courtroom photograph is the only known photograph of the original layout of the courtroom known to exist, according to Jackson. The photograph of the old jail is also the only known photograph during the late 1800s to early 1900s known in existence, said Jackson.
