Have you noticed the hay bales on CR 136 in front of the Coliseum? The UF/IFAS Extension Suwannee County 4-H Hay Bale Decorating Contest started in late September and hay bales were judged last week. Seven of the 12, 4-H clubs in the county participated in this fun competition, which featured a Fall theme and a top prize of $100, $75 for second place, and $50 for third place. This year the McAlpin 4-H Club, with their Fall into Adventure display, won the Hay Bale Decorating Contest, their second first place finish in a row. The Leona 4-H Club, with the pig display, placed second, while the Farm Fresh 4-H Club and their Duck Dynasty hay bale placed third.
The Hay Bale Decorating Contest, now in its third year, has drawn a lot of interest from the community. Young and old have taken the opportunity to walk through the hay bales and take pictures with their favorites. The Hay Bale Decorating Contest was held in conjunction with National 4-H Week, which included a 4-H Rally to introduce the Suwannee County 4-H program to new youth, a proclamation claiming National 4-H Week that was signed by the County Commissioners, and a 4-H farm judging contest that was held in Mayo.
