Collins seeks county commission seat District 3

Live Oak — I am proud to say that my family has lived and worked in this county for over 170 years. Their lives are as diverse as the seasons. They fought in the Civil War, became educators, doctors and even a senator. What ties them all together is the working of their land and a sense of place and purpose in their community. It is this family that instilled in me a farmer’s work ethic and an old fashioned moral code. My brothers and I were expected to work the fields. From early on I understood the connection between hard work and rewards.

I left here to explore the world and my place in it. My path led me through college where I received a degree in history with highest honors. The careers I have chosen, though seemingly different, are all connected through adapting to the needs of people. Whether I was teaching math, writing grants, curating an exhibition for a museum or cooking for 500 people my purpose was always the same, to meet and exceed the needs of my clients. Leadership, adaptability and problem solving; these skills I have honed through education, work and travel.

Six years ago I returned to Suwannee County. I liken it to a whispering breeze calling me home. Since returning I have worked with my father and brother on the family timber farm. It has strengthened my identity and place in this world. It is here that I find a sense of peace and wonderment. It is a love born of the land, family and belonging to a community. I have always known that my heart is bound to a farm, the banks of the Suwannee and the cool shade of the oaks that are our namesake.

I have listened to the people of this community. Our wants and needs are varied; however we mostly agree that it is exceedingly important that we create stable job growth, reign in wasteful spending and aggressively protect our natural resources. I will use all of my knowledge and skills to open new doors of industry. I will work beyond the boundaries of local government taking our needs to the highest levels of state. I will work tirelessly to accomplish our goals and break down barriers that would deny us a better future. A very wise woman said to me, “In the house of politics it is vital to keep the doors of both parties open if you wish to accomplish anything.”

Through this endeavor I have drawn even closer to my family. I have learned more about the people of this community and have been inspired by their wisdom and advice. I feel a great sense of encouragement in closing divides and together becoming stronger in our awareness of a common goal. I will be humbled and honored if chosen to lead my district. I am Jennifer Elizabeth Collins and I implore you to vote according to your conscience.
