New Suwannee Storm basketball team organized

There were a lot of storms in the past few weeks, but the most exciting one to arrive is a new basketball team called the "Suwannee Storm." The team was organized by several parents who wanted additional off-season experience for their youth. There are many similar teams throughout Florida and other states who register and play under organizations such as the USSSA, USBA, and AAU. The teams participate in weekend tournaments, and may qualify to play at higher levels.

Players who were chosen to participate exhibited a great attitude, and a love of the game of basketball. They are from all over Suwannee County and represent several different schools.

According to team organizers, "The team is very new and we are still learning the system as we go. We are trying to make it a very positive experience to allow these young players exposure at higher-level events. Their skills will improve and they will travel while being a part of something fun at the same time. Coaches Chris Frye and Jimmie Taylor work hard with the team and are valuable assets to the program." Team practices are currently being held at a rented facility inside Suwannee Health and Fitness Center in Live Oak and the Storm would like to thank this and all businesses who have helped the team so far.

The Storm is a non-profit organization which relies solely on contributions and sponsorships for tournament entry fees, transportation, uniforms, and team supplies. Team organizers Holli Miller and Belinda Horn add, "We would like to enter many more tournaments all over the state, but as a new organization our initial funding is currently the limiting factor. This is a great opportunity for people to be a part of the community and to support a positive youth program."

Miller adds that there will be public fundraisers in the near future, but donations at any time would be greatly appreciated since the season has already begun. Any individual or business who would like to contribute is invited to contact the team at 935-0022 or 935-1355.

Go Storm!
