Update: Name released of pedestrian killed this morning

Live Oak — A pedestrian was struck and killed by a passing vehicle early Tuesday morning on CR 137 near 264th Street, just east of Branford, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Robert B. Starcher, 51, of Millville, N.J., was walking on CR 137 around 6 a.m. when a light blue, 2006 Kia Spectra proceeding southbound on CR 137 struck him, According to FHP.

FHP reported that Starcher was visiting family after his mother’s recent death. He was reportedly staying at his brother’s residence off CR 137 on the day prior to the crash, where they both had been drinking alcoholic beverages most of the evening, reported the FHP.

“According to the investigation, at some time during the early morning hours (around 6 a.m.), Starcher awoke from sleeping and for some unknown reason ventured out onto CR 137, where he was walking southbound within the southbound travel lane (at least six feet within the lane),” the FHP reported.

As Starcher walked on the road, a southbound vehicle driven by 71-year-old Doris Huddle, Wellborn, was approaching him, unaware of his presence in the roadway.

FHP reported that Huddle did not have sufficient enough warning or time to avoid hitting Starcher with the front of her vehicle due to the darkness of the area.

Starcher was pronounced deceased at the scene by Suwannee County Fire/Rescue, according to the FHP.
