Boatright's out of the race

Superintendent of schools won't seek a second term

Superintendent of Schools Walter Boatright will not seek reelection in November, he said Monday.

"I'd like the chance to pursue other career opportunities and goals," said Boatright, who is completing his first term as superintendent.

Boatright didn't elaborate on his plans.

"It's just a little preliminary," he said. "I'm going to take my time and consider my options."

However, he said he did not anticipate taking a different job within the school district. And he said he plans to continue living in Suwannee County.

"I've had a wonderful four years," Boatright said. "It's been an honor and a privilege to serve the students, faculty and staff of our district."

Boatright said he had "no regrets at all" concerning his tenure as superintendent.

"I can step down and be confident our district is in a good position to continue to grow and excel," he said.

Boatright, considered by many a favorite to replace the retiring Morris Steen as president of North Florida Community College in Madison, was not selected last month as a finalist for the post.
