The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Valdosta Bassbusters, Valdosta Bassmasters, and the City of Lakeland, GA, will host the Fourth Annual Youth Fishing Derby and Casting Kids Competition on Saturday, May 28, from 8 a.m. until 2:15 p.m. The Fishing Derby will take place from 8:30 a.m. until 10 a.m. at Flatlanders Lake off Hwy. 221 in downtown Lakeland.
Registration for the event will begin at 8 a.m. Participants will be placed in one of four age groups, spanning ages three through fifteen. There is a limit of one rod per child. First, second, and third place prizes will be awarded in each age group for largest fish by weight.
All other activities will be held at Banks Lake National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) off Hwy. 122. A Casting Kids Clinic and Competition will begin at 10:45 a.m. and will continue until all registered participants have finished. There will be two groups: ages 7-10 and 11-14. Certificates will be presented to all participants and prizes awarded to winners.
A variety of demonstrations and displays will be available including bass boats, motors, knot tying, t-shirt decorating, and a raffle. A two hour canoe tour of Banks Lake will also be offered for $10.
