Suwannee High hosted an intense Bulldog Invitational weightlifting competition Thursday, March 18. Spruce Creek showed up with 20 lifters and nine state championships in Class 2-A. The Spruce Creek lifters upped the bar and the level of competition at this year's Bulldog Invitational with stellar performances in many weight classes. It was an eye-opening meet with many Bulldogs impressed but few intimidated by the competition.



Suwannee placed fourth with 31 points right behind Columbia County. Spruce Creek won the meet with 88, Blountstown was second with 43, Columbia had 35, Valdosta was fifth with 13 and Baker County was sixth with 9 points.



Individual Results

119-Dalton Kurtz placed fourth lifting 125 at the bench, 130 in the clean and jerk for a total of 255.

129-Brian Campbell placed fifth with 215 on the bench, 165 in the clean and jerk for a total of 380.

139-Damiona Gillyard placed fourth lifting 245 on the bench, 215 in the clean and jerk for a total of 460.

169-Alan Clayton placed third lifting 255 on the bench, 270 in the clean and jerk for a total of 535.

169-Nick Beck placed fourth with 265 lifted on the bench, 255 in the clean and jerk for a total of 520.

183-Greg Gabey placed fifth with 265 on the bench, 275 in the clean and jerk for a total of 540.

219-Eric Wright placed sixth with 280 on the bench, 275 in the clean and jerk for a total of 555.

238-Michael Wright placed fifth with 300 on the bench, 265 in the clean and jerk for a total of 565.

Heavyweight class-Charles Butterbean Wooten created quite a stir at the meet with even the Spruce Creek stars watching as Wooten lifted an amazing 730 for first place. Butterbean lifted 420 on the bench and 310 in the clean and jerk with only two lifts, one for the bench and one for the clean and jerk.

Heavyweight-A.J. Schuler placed third lifting 365 on the bench and 285 in the clean and jerk for a total of 650.



The District Weightlifting Finals will be held in the Suwannee High gym on Wednesday March 24 at 4 p.m. The Sectional Finals will also be held at home at Suwannee High on Friday, April 9 at 10 a.m. Suwannee has an amazing weightlifting program.
