Joseph Whiteside, 19, whose address is listed as Rt 13 Box 759-C, Lake City was sentenced to 22 months in a jail bed program on March 10.
Whiteside was arrested in the early morning hours on June 29, 2002 and booked into the Suwannee County Jail on eight counts of sexual battery charges on a child under the age of 12.
At the time of his arrest, the bond for Whiteside was set at $50,000. First appearance was on the morning of June 29.
Whiteside was released to his father on house arrest for the past few months.
A probable cause affidavit issued by the Suwannee County Sheriff's office back in June 2002, Whiteside was accused of allegedly having oral sex with a child under the age of 12 years, seven to eight times over a period of one to one and a half months.
As of Friday, March 14, Whiteside was incarcerated in the Suwannee County Jail, but according to Suwannee County Sheriff's Major Les Hall would more than likely be moved to a jail location that participates in the jail bed program.
Lee Peters with the Public Defenders office in Suwannee County told the News on Friday, there are three jails that participate with the Department of Corrections for the jail bed program and those are Madison, Dixie and Hamilton. They are designed with 12-15 beds in each jail to house first time offenders. Peters said "they get a taste of the prison system without going directly there."
Whiteside was sentenced by Circuit Judge Thomas J. Kennon, Jr. Ernie Page was the Public Defender who handled the case.
According to Peters, Whiteside pled guilty to attempted sex acts on a child.
Also, Whiteside was sentenced to 15 years sex offender probation which means he will be closely monitored at all times. Also, part of Whiteside's probation will be counseling and sex therapy.
Whiteside will turn 20 years of age on June 29. He is a 2002 graduate of Branford High School.
