The Buccaneer basketball team took advantage of an invitation to play in the Bronson holiday tournament this past week filling in for a one night stand, despite being shorthanded a couple of players. The opponent would be a small team from University.

Branford would come out of the gate early with David Campbell immediately going to the basket for two points. Brian Bullock would send in a nice assist to Travis Williams for two points, and then Williams would return the favor to Michael Lindblade for a basket, and the Bucs were in great shape early. University would gear up their passing offense however and score the next ten points to take a 14-6 lead. Branford would claw their way back into the contest with a putback by Lindblade and a late first quarter basket by Campbell to pull the Bucs within a 14-11 score

In the second quarter despite Williams taking charge on the glass pulling down three rebounds, while handing out an assist and scoring a basket, University would outscore the Bucs 15-5 in the second period to take control of the contest.

Branford was never able to dent the margin, but did get some great fourth quarter efforts. Tim Clark came into the game and scored five points, while grabbing a rebound and stole the ball once which led to an easy basket.

Bobby Engskow took advantage of his fourth quarter playing time stealing the ball twice, while deflecting a pass and grabbed an offensive rebound which led to a Branford basket.

Leading the way for Branford was Campbell scoring 9 points, while pulling down three rebounds and had a steal.

Williams would lead the rebounders with five, and scored 4 points, and tallied 2 assists in the game.

Lindblade would turn in another impressive outing underneath the glass scoring 6 points while pulling down 3 boards.

Bullock was able to drop 4 points in the game and grabbed 4 rebounds while adding to his team leading assist total with 2.

Cannon is still trying to get his shooting touch back due to an injury and the holidays, but still managed to drop three points from the stripe and provided an assist while pulling down a couple of rebounds and stole the ball three times.

Andrew Johnson was effective for Branford pulling down a couple of rebounds and had a put- back for a basket.

Branford will be sending both the boys and girls varsity teams to Cedar Key tonight with a tip off of 5 p.m. scheduled for the ladies. The Bucs will send all four of their teams into battle against Bronson on Friday night at the home gym with the JV ladies slated for a 3:30 tip off. The varsity ladies are very much alive for the second place position in the district standings, with Bronson being the team to beat for that spot. Branford would fall in a close battle in Bronson, but a win here would certainly put them in great position of avoiding the extra game in the district tournament, and would avoid the same bracket as the district leading Mayo Lady Hornets. It would sure be an easier road to regionals to avoid that bracket. Both varsity teams will travel to Lake City Christian on Tuesday night to complete a very busy week of action.
