The score was 7-4 Suwannee Lady Dogs but the true victory was for the girls themselves. The Lady Dogs have struggled this season to put some wins into their bag and this victory over a tough school like Florida High was all the sweeter. This win put the Lady Dogs at 3-7 for the season and 2-3 in district play.
Suwannee opened with Al Cash hitting a single and stealing second base. Kate Smith got on when the second baseman dropped a fly ball allowing Cash to make it to third. Lea Schenck drove in Cash with a single but the inning ended with Schenck stranded on second and the score 1-0 Lady Dogs.
Kate Smith was the opening pitcher for the Lady Dogs. Florida High scored one off Smith in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 1-1 going into the second inning.
In the second inning Kate Townsend singled and scored off a Florida High error. Florida High was shut down in the second by Smith. The second inning ended with the Lady Dogs up 2-1.
Suwannee went scoreless in the third but a Florida High batter smacked a two-run homer to add to a run already scored earlier in the inning and the Lady Dogs were down 2-4.
Townsend got things rolling for Suwannee in the fourth when she drew a walk. Katy Norris hit into a fielder's choice and the second baseman made another error allowing Townsend to make it safely to second. With two runners on, Cash hit a single scoring Townsend to make the score 3-4 Florida High.
Smith sent three straight batters back to the dugout to finish the inning.
In the fifth, Smith led off with a walk. Schenck sacrificed to advance Smith to second. George Foster singled to send Smith to third And Townsend drove Smith in to tie the game at 4-4. Norris grounded to the short stop who dropped the ball allowing Townsend to get to third and Foster to score. The Lady Dogs were in the lead. Debra Craig singled to drive in Townsend and score the third run of the inning.
Florida High was once again shut down by Smith. The fifth inning ended with the Lady Dogs up 6-4.
In the sixth inning, Smith and Lea Schenck, both Suwannee pitchers, had hits. Smith scored off a wild pitch to make the score 7-4 going into the final inning.
Neither team posted any runs in the seventh so the game ended with the Lady Dogs capturing the victory 7-4 over Florida High.
This was Kate Smith's first win of the season. She fought hard to control the mound after giving up that two-run homer. She gave up three singles, one double and the home run, while striking out two and walking two.
Smith had strong defense behind her all night. Suwannee committed only two errors, but no runs were scored as a result.
Lea Schenck had the defensive play of the night. Schenck fielded a hard ball hit to her right and threw the batter out a first. Her great reflexes and crossover allowed her to rob Florida High of a base hit.
Jenna Jordan also had a great defensive play when she caught a well-hit ball in right field and threw the batter out at first.
Suwannee out-hit Florida High 10 to five. Al Cash hit 3 for 4 with one RBI. Kate Townsend hit 2 for 3 with one RBI. Lea Schenck went 2 for 4 with one RBI. Kate Smith went 1 for 3, George Foster 1 for 3 and Debra Craig went 1 for 3.
The Lady Dog softball team will compete in Bell this weekend in the big Bell Softball Tournament. Look for the Lady Dogs at home against Taylor Tuesday, March 23 at 7 p.m., then at home again on Tuesday, March 30 against Florida High for the rematch. Good luck girls and go Lady Dogs!
