JASPER - Major Samuel Henry, the son of the late Samuel and Vivian Henry, recently retired after 25 years of service in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Major Henry graduated from Florida State University in 1983 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant on April 13, 1984. Major Henry is married to the former Karla Simmons of Jasper. They have two sons, Samuel and Michael.

After graduating from basic training, he was assigned to the Second Force Service Support Group, where he served as a Shore Party Platoon Commander.

In February 1988, he was ordered to Marine Corps Recruiting Station in Jacksonville where he served as the Operation Officer. Major Henry was instrumental in helping his recruiting station earn recognition as Recruiting Station of the Year for fiscal years '88 and '90.

In October 1990, he reported to Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, where he served as the Operations Officer for the Rifle Range Detachment. In July 1992 he joined the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) where he served as the Assistant Logistics Officers for the MEU, Command Element. During the MEU's deployment to Somalia he participated in three peacekeeping operations. From July 1994 to June 1995, Major Henry served as the Assistant Plans Officer, Division G-4, 1st Marine Division. In July 1995 he was assigned to 1st Combat Engineer Battalion where he served as the Battalion S-4 Logistics Officer.

In June 1997 he reported to Marine Corps Logistics Base, Albany, Ga., where he served as the Director, Base Support Division and Deputy Director, Installation and Logistics Division.

He was reassigned to Marine Corps Logistics Bases, Albany, Ga. in December 1998 where he served as the G-3 Assistant Operations Officer and as the Director, Technical Data Management Division.

In March 2000, he assumed his present assignment as the Command Inspector for Marine Corps Logistics Bases, Albany, Ga.

His personal decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Gold Star in lieu of 2nd award, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal and the Combat Action Ribbon.
