It is not known what the Lady Hornets basketball team has to do to earn respect. Madison County hosts a tournament and places Mayo as their first round opponent which is normally used for the lowest seed in the tournament. The Lady Hornets have established themselves as a quality program that includes wins last year over Trinity Catholic and Sante Fe.

This year, the ladies dropped a very competitive game to third ranked NFC, and a hard fought five point loss against Trinity Catholic.

In district play, nobody has stayed within 40 points of Mayo.

The Madison County classic involved the host team along with Mayo, 3A eighth ranked Taylor County and an undefeated University Christian private school.

In the opening game, University Christian wasted little time in dispatching Taylor County, while the Lady Hornets sent a loud message with a convincing 64-28 win over the host Madison team.

Natalie Land would lead the Hornets with 33 points, and also led the game in rebounds with 13.

Marla Alcazar would score 6 points, but would match that total in assists with 6 finding Land on more than one occasion.

Other contributors on the offensive side of the ball was Sunshine Reid with 13, Sharhonda Cherry 4, Sabrina Craig, Fran Smith and Lillie Prine each with 2 points.

The consolation game would give the home crowd a lot to cheer about with a come from behind win over Taylor County. Madison County fans stuck around looking forward to watching a talented University Christian team put on a show. It still had not struck them that Mayo had a pretty decent team themselves.

University was able to go into the locker room with a 42-36 halftime advantage, and would hold that margin at 57-51 after three quarters, but University Christian would not only get a dose of Land, but also a ray of Sunshine. Reid would score the games last five points, which included a three pointer with the score tied at 63, and would ice the game with two free throws late to earn the Lady Hornets a huge win and claim the Classic championship trophy.

Land would finish the game with 38 points, and pulled down 11 rebounds. She would also block two shots, and stole the ball twice while handing out an assist. University Christian put themselves in foul trouble down the stretch trying to guard her which turned out to be key.

Reid appears to coming into her own as of late. She would score 15 points in the contest, and would pull down 9 rebounds. She would also block a shot and steal the ball once while getting two assists for the game. She would score 7 points in the final period, while pulling down 3 boards to lead the comeback.

Alcazar did a great job of handling the University pressure, and scored 9 points with 3 rebounds and a steal.

Fran Smith did an outstanding job competing on the boards pulling down 5 against a very talented and quick group of forwards. She would block a shot and score a basket before leaving the game with fouls.

Sharhonda Cherry hit a big three pointer in the first quarter which pulled Mayo within three points after University appeared to be running away early.
