The Branford Lady Buccaneers basketball team fell in the first round of district play to Hamilton County 41-33 to end the 2004-05 season. Despite the loss, Branford would not go down easy.
Branford fell behind by twenty points at the half, but used strong board play by Lauren Schultz in the second half to fuel a furious comeback that frustrated the Jasper coach. The Lady Bucs outscored the Lady Trojans 26-14 in the second half on the strength of a much more determined defense, and saw the offense get it in high gear.
Schultz would finish the night with 14 points to lead Branford, and once again hit double digits in rebounding against a much larger Jasper team underneath the basket.
Assisting in the second half comeback was Amanda McNabb scoring 6 points, while providing the defense in the front court to get Branford back into the game.
Also turning in an outstanding game was Krystyn Lynch, scoring 4 points, and was effective in defensive pressure along with a solid rebounding effort.
Other Bucs adding to the score board was Whitney Dubose with 4 points, Kelly Dempsey and Shauna Nettles, each with 2 points, while Megan Roberts added a free throw to close out the Bucs scoring total.
Despite only scoring one win this year, this Lady Bucs basketball team will bring back everyone next year, and should be very competitive in the district. The improvement from the start of the season to the close was certainly noteworthy. Thanks for the great season ladies, and we look forward to what should be a great year in 2005-06.
