The girls basketball season will get rolling next Monday with the first game of the season. The Lady Dogs will be facing a district opponent for this first game in a new district with a new coach.

The coach of the last two years for the Lady Dogs was Chaon Graham. Graham moved away and this year the Lady Dogs are being led by Kaffa Owens. Owens said coaching the Lady Dogs will be a challenge and she is looking forward to the season.

The Lady Dogs are in a new district this year. Old foes Santa Fe, Bradford, Rickards and Keystone are replaced by Madison, East Gadsden, Lafayette, Wakulla and Florida High. This year the Lady Dogs also have an expanded schedule. Last year they played 18 games and this year they have 21 games on the slate. There are more home games this year so there will be more opportunities to watch some great women's basketball. Suwannee's Lady Dogs will be at home 11 times.

The Lady Dogs have some great returning starters. Owens says Sharon Jelks will be strong this year. Erika Haynes is back as well as temperamental Dominique Reed. Reed is a talented player with great ball-handling skills.

Also returning for the Lady Dogs is Cheretta Ross. Ross is tall and talented. Just a sophomore, she possesses the height and the ability to be a huge asset for the lady Dogs this season.

Lady Dog Shamela Brady will be ineligible to play for the first few games. Owens hopes Brady will change that and be able to join the team for the rest of the year. Brady is practicing with the team.

Returning with speed and ball-handling ability to the Lady Dogs is Erika Haynes. Haynes is the fastest player on the team. Her fast break scored a ton of points for the Lady Dogs last year.

Look for solid play this year from Marcella Walker. Walker is an aggressive blocker and a good outside shooter.

Other varsity Lady Dogs this year are Ariel Ivey, Alicia Carbough, Tori Clayton, Denise Jones and Paris Perry.

The Lady Dogs open up Monday, Nov. 24 at home against Rickards. The game starts at 8 p.m. Come out and watch some exciting basketball as the Suwannee Lady Dogs take on the Rickards Lady Raiders in the first game of the year. Go Lady Dogs!
