By Coach Steve Brown
The Branford High School varsity football team traveled to Liberty County this past Friday night and returned home with a 49-6 loss.
The Bucs have encountered numerous injuries to key skill positions this year on the line, the offensive backfield and the secondary which has forced some younger players to step up and has caused Coach Steve Brown to have to move players around to try and provide a front line.
Tim Clark has done a nice job of stepping in at the quarterback position completing a good percentage of his passes which included a long pass completion to Brett Suggs for the Bucs lone touchdown against the Bulldogs. Suggs was on the receiving end of three passes for 72 yards earning him offensive player of the week.
Clark not only was effective in the offensive backfield, but defensively had 8 tackles, while assisting on four others earning him defensive player of the week.
Branford will have an open week before preparing for their opening district contest at home against Bronson. Branford has never needed an open week so desperately as now with all the injuries. They are hoping to get some players back, and will allow some of the players playing hurt to possibly heal.
According to Coach Brown, it has been frustrating to some degree, but the young players being asked to step up and fill roles are doing a great job under the circumstances.
