Branford baseball came alive Tuesday night with a ten hit performance as a team, scoring 14 runs and allowing only 3 by opposing Hamilton County to notch it’s second victory of the year. Senior pitcher Brandon Gardner pitched 4 innings allowing 5 hits and 3 runs. Junior Dustin Cannon finished the last inning and held Jasper scoreless to insure the victory for the Bucs. The Bucs scored 7 runs in the bottom half of the 1st inning and 7 runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning. Eight of the starting 9 players for the Bucs recorded hits. Dusty Lee was 2 for 3 with a double and two RBI. Dustin Cannon and Dustin Gardner also had multiple RBI for the Bucs.

Senior Dusty Lee was voted Player of the Game with his multi-hit performance and also played solidly in the field at third base making several nice plays in the field.

4 Trenton 3

Branford baseball stayed hot in Trenton on Friday night to come away with a victory in a huge district matchup. Our defense and pitching really bailed us out several times during the contest to allow our club to have a chance at a victory. I knew we would be in for a dogfight, when we watched them take pre-game practice. They looked much improved from our previous meeting in which we won 7-5 in the pre season classic, and its always tough to go into a district opponents home field and come away with a victory.

Hitting was scarce on this night with Branford recording only 5 hits on the night. Perhaps the biggest came off the bat of Colton Spivey, who homered while entering the game off the bench for an injured Dustin Cannon. That was a big spark for our team, Colton looked comfortable at the plate and came up with a huge hit for us. Several plays in the field helped the Bucs get out of some bad situations. Dusty Lee had an unassisted double play in the field. JD Strickland helped lead a rundown between home and third for a big third out in an inning. Dusty Lee also fielded a well placed bunt and threw to a covering David Campbell in the 5th inning for a huge out. Tyler Byrd made some excellent plays in center field during some pivotal points during the game, while also notching a double to lead off the game. Senior catcher Ryan McKenzie played excellent behind the plate and also notched a hit in the fifth inning. Catching duties were a big question mark for this year’s squad and Ryan has assumed the responsibility, while doing an admirable job.

Player of the Game honors go to Colton Spivey who entered the game and gave the Bucs a much needed spark with his homer in the fourth inning. Also sophomore JD Strickland pitched well for 4 innings allowing only one run while striking out one allowing 4 hits and only one walked batter. Dusty Lee came in from 3rd base duties and allowed 2 runs over three innings of work on the mound.
