The Branford boys varsity basketball team headed off on their Christmas break on a high note. They won our own Branford Holiday Tournament in fine fashion by dispatching Cedar Key on Monday and pushing past Aucilla Christian Tuesday evening. Before going over the game specifics, I would like to take the opportunity to thank all the school officials, booster club members, and volunteers that made the inaugural Country Classic a success. Steve Bullock and the rest of the Branford Athletic Booster Club teamed with Assistant Athletic Director Steve Brown to ensure that the tournament logistics were reliably handled. Parents of basketball players showed their support by volunteering their time and effort to complete any number of tasks. Special thanks are in order for Ria Williams and her daughter Natalie. Natalie decorated the front entrance to the Buccaneer gym while her mom commanded the most important room outside of the gym, the hospitality room. Never underestimate the effect of free food on the perception of hospitality. The referees and other coaches all commented on the good time they had during the tournament and they mentioned the hospitality room in particular.

Recapping a very successful couple of days starts with a nice 50-22 victory over Cedar Key. Randy Johnson led the scoring with 13 points. Travis Williams pitched in 10 rebounds and Jacob Ludlum had 5 steals. In the championship game, Branford played a balanced and exciting game to beat a savvy Aucilla Christian squad 58-47.

Freshman David Campbell simply refused to entertain any possibility of losing this game. When the Bucs needed a clutch basket, Campbell provided it. He finished with 21 points which included 3-4 from downtown and kicked in 6 rebounds while guarding one of Aucilla's best players the entire gamae.

Michael Lindblade scored 13 points and had 9 big rebounds.

Brian Bullock scored all 11 of his points during the crucial third quarter run that put the Bucs way ahead to stay. His points came off 3-6 shooting from the three point line.

Randy Johnson earned a spot on the All Tournament Team by leading the team in scoring against Cedar Key and played suffocating defense against another one of Aucilla Christians outstanding ball players holding his man to zero points in the final deciding quarter. Campbell was named the tournament's "Most Valuable Player" for his superior performance in the championship game. David played the entire game, led the team in scoring and held his man to zero points in the fourth quarter also.

Congratulations to these two players and to the entire team for keeping the tournament trophy at Branford.
